Easy Cold Brewed Coffee (French Press Method)

cold brewed coffee

Me and my coffee addiction again. Okay, so I’ve mentioned before that I love iced coffee. It’s my thing, even when it’s snowing. Well, maybe not. It doesn’t snow here in Orange County so I can’t say with absolute certainness that I would crave an ice cold beverage when it’s that chilly out. Anyway, when I make it at home, I brew coffee the regular way and let it sit in the refrigerator to get nice and cool before adding ice, vanilla syrup and milk. This is actually how a lot of coffee chains make their iced coffees. When the coffee sits out for awhile it becomes more and more bitter and requires more sweetener and/or milk.

I wanted a better iced coffee so I did some research. I found some parts of the world that are known for their delicious iced coffee and it all starts by being cold brewed. This cuts out the bitterness and maintains a smooth, rich tasting coffee. Cold brewed coffee actually lasts longer than hot brewed coffee so you can make big batches to have on hand without having to brew constantly, which takes 8 – 10 hours! It’s easy though…I promise. All you need is a coffee grinder and a French press (I found this one at Cost Plus World Market for $19.99 plus I had a coupon). You can grind your beans at night, add them to the French press with some water and let it sit in the refrigerator overnight. In the morning, it’s done and ready to be pour over some ice. The coffee is smooth and bold, so different from hot brewed coffee.

I’m still experimenting with the cold brewing method but I just had to share this simple and easy French press method. Any one can do it and the coffee it produces is unlike anything you’ve made the hot way! During my research, I actually found a couple of companies that make and bottle cold brewed coffee available to purchase and I’m really excited to try it! I’ll let you know how they are.
