Bahama Mama

This is such an amazing drink! The Bahama Mama has been around for a very long time and I believe everyone that has ever tried it has loved it. I mentioned in my last cocktail post that I have a list of drinks from the past that I want to recreate as close to their original form as possible. This was one of them. Although, I’ve had a really hard time tracing the Bahama Mamas origin, there was mention of the tropical drink back in the 1800’s but then not again until the early 20th century and I’ve had no luck in finding the true original recipe. But I’m okay with that because this one rocks!

There are so many variations of the Bahama Mama (like hundreds) but this one is definitely my favorite. It’s a tropical drink that combines two different rums, pineapple and citrus flavors. It’s not too fruity, you can still taste the booze, and it’s so easy to sip on. It’s such a refreshing drink and if you close your eyes, you can almost feel yourself lounging in a hammock suspended between two palm trees on an island in the Pacific. Well, kind of. Try it and tell me what you think. I’d also love to hear your own variations of the Bahama Mama.

Ingredients
  1. 1 oz dark rum
  2. 3/4 oz coconut rum (Malibu is what I use)
  3. 2 oz orange juice
  4. 2 oz pineapple juice
  5. 1/2 oz lime juice
  6. 1/2 oz grenadine
Instructions
  1. Combine all ingredients in a shaker filled with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled Collins glass half full of ice. Garnish with orange or lime wedge, pineapple chunk, maraschino cherry or teeny tiny umbrella.
Notes
  1. For this variation, I used fresh squeezed juices which I think make better drinks but you can always use what you've already got if that means bottled juices.
